Hungarian Claw Workshop
This workshop focuses on learning the Hungarian Claw technique to improve your throwing. The claw allows you to pull, collar, and compress the clay simultaneously, combining three essential movements into one efficient technique. Students regularly tell me, "This is the tallest cylinder I've ever thrown," and consistently praise how much more control and confidence they gain through the process.
Suitable for all skill levels. One thing Dwayne has found surprising through teaching is that people who are new to clay often pick up the technique the fastest because they haven't yet developed years of throwing habits.
Students will work alongside Dwayne throughout the day with demonstrations, guided practice, and individual feedback.
Participants are encouraged to bring their own clay. The clay Dwayne prefers is available for purchase through Kickwheel. Glazes and firing services are also available for purchase if desired. Otherwise, work made during the workshop will not be kept.
Homemade lunch will be available for purchase at the studio for $12.
Dwayne Sackey is a Portland-based functional potter working primarily with atmospheric firing techniques. He earned a BFA from the Oregon College of Art and Craft in 2019. Rather than aiming for flawlessness, Dwayne's work embraces the trace of a fluid, organic process and the human hand. Gentle curves, textured surfaces, and meandering lines speak through expressive brushwork and layered glazes.
